WM Seeks Rezoning for Pennsylvania Landfill Expansion

Waste Management (WM) seeks to expand its Grand Central Sanitary Landfill in Plainfield Township, Pa., by 81 acres and has asked the township to rezone 211 acres adjacent to the landfill in order to do so.

The proposed expansion would cost an estimated $42 million to set up and would extend the landfill’s life by 20 years. Lehigh Valley Live reports that 81 acres would serve as the new landfill area, while 52 acres would be used for support activities and 192 acres of woods and wetlands would remain untouched by the expansion project.

The rezoning application will be reviewed by the township’s planning commission. Commissioners will provide a recommendation to the board of supervisors, who will ultimately decide whether to rezone the area.
