Residents of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, are on the brink of being able to have their organic waste picked up right from their homes, if a new amendment is agreed upon.
The City Council in Regina will be discussing an update to its waste management bylaw in an upcoming meeting. This would begin curbside pickup for both food and yard waste.
"This is very important for all of us," said Kelvin Ng, a University of Regina engineering professor with expertise in solid waste management. "The program should be able to help reduce the amount of waste in our landfills, helping us to improve the environmental sustainability of the [city's solid waste] program."
The organic waste pickup program has been in the works for years in Regina. The city has laid out its framework for energy and sustainability it would like to achieve, and this new action will have them going in the right direction.
According to the framework, which Regina released publicly in March 2022, the city lists different actions it can take to reduce its carbon footprint and become a renewable, net-zero community by 2050. The plan also includes an increase in the recycling diverted by 65%, keeping the materials out of the land fill. Regina also plans to increase composting, by composting 95% of organic waste by 2025.
The city of Regina plans to cut the amount of waste sent to landfills by 26,000 tons per year and eliminate more than 11,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year in the first decade of this framework.
