Mushroom Cultivation Produces Three Times as Much Waste

European researchers are looking for ways to reuse the significant amount of waste produced from mushroom cultivation.

For every one kilogram of mushrooms that is harvested, three times the amount of waste is produced. The substrate after product is useful for compost, but because it contains a lot of water, it makes it heavy to transport. The majority of it ends up in landfills.

New innovations from companies such as BioDetection Systems are looking to turn the waste into a viable product. The company is taking leftover stems and mushroom pieces and turning them into burgers and fertilizer.
