New York City Expands Curbside Compost Program to Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island

Curbside composting is expanding in New York City as the service is now available to all city residents.

Curbside composting is expanding in New York City as the service is now available to all city residents.

Beginning this week, the curbside composting program became available for the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Previously, the program had been launched in Queens in Brooklyn. Residents will need to put their food waste, yard waste, and food-soil paper in brown DSNY bins or a secure container (that is 55 gallons or less) on recycling days.

New York law requires residents to separate recyclable materials from trash currently, and now, with the compost program expansion, they will need to separate compostable materials as well or be subject to fines.
