Lexington, Ky., Seeks Bids for Paper Recycling

The city of Lexington, Ky., in May suspended paper recycling due to changes in the global recycling market. Now, the city is taking a step toward reestablishing paper recycling by announcing a request for proposals (RFP) to businesses that are interested in providing paper recycling services.

“We’ve done our homework and put together a RFP that will provide Lexington with a sound paper recycling operation,” said Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton in a statement. “We’ve found that traditional options are no longer available. It has taken time, but I think we now have a clear picture of what is needed.”

“Lexington’s recycling program has needed an overhaul for several years,” added Gorton. “Our facility is inadequate, our equipment is outdated and markets for recyclables have changed. We’re putting together a good plan to move forward. Our overhaul needs to be comprehensive and sustainable.”

The RFP was put together by Resource Recycling Systems, and the city aims to bring back paper recycling in the fall.
