January 24, 2008
The U.S. Conference of Mayors, Atlanta-based Novelis and Stamford, Conn.-based Keep America Beautiful have announced the winners of the fourth annual Cans for Cash: City Recycling Challenge. The announcement was made at the 76th meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington. The challenge included more than 50 like-sized cities competing against each other by collecting the most aluminum cans.
"Through the City Recycling Challenge, we continue to actively promote and encourage growth in aluminum can recycling programs in communities," said Kevin Greenawalt, president of Novelis North America, in a press release. "By recycling these aluminum cans, cities avoided more than 24,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which is equivalent to taking more than 25,000 cars off the road for a year."

Division One (population 250,000+) Milwaukee, Wisc. - 1,385,328 pounds, Mayor Tom Barrett.
