Cans for Habitat Program Announces Results

Cans for Habitat, Arlington, Va., has announced the results of its monthly challenge, in which 70 Habitat for Humanity affiliates competed each month from June through October to recycle the most aluminum cans. The affiliate that recycled the most cans each month was awarded $5,000. In Early 2008, RecycleBank also will award a $30,000 grant to the affiliate that has the highest overall amount of recycled aluminum, and demonstrates the best marketing and media outreach.

During the five-month competition, 189,600 pounds of can were recycled, generating more than $137,500 from recycling proceeds.

“The aluminum industry is proud to be a part of a program that both promotes aluminum can recycling and supports Habitat’s goal to eliminate sub-standard housing,” said Patrick Kelly, program director for Cans for Habitat, in a press release.

The winning grant affiliates were:

June: Webster Habitat for Humanity, Springhill, La.

July: San Luis Valley Habitat for Humanity, Alamosa, Colo.

August: Grand Island Habitat for Humanity, Grand Island, Neb.

September: Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity, Fort Wayne, Ind.

October: Oswego Habitat for Humanity, Oswego, N.Y., and Habitat for Humanity of Austin County, Bellville, Texas (Tie, money awarded to both)
