Casella Waste Systems, Rutland, Vt., is considering the sale of its Maine Energy Recovery facility to Mattson Development, a local Maine real estate company.

According to a report from the Associated Press, local officials oppose the incinerator facility, and a former mayor of nearby town is suing the company because of odors coming from the facility.

Last year, Casella signed a five-year contract with the host community of Biddeford, Maine, that included a clause for the city and company to work together to close the facility if determined to be mutually beneficial for the future of the company.
