Casella Waste Systems, Rutland, Vt., has received approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goal. The company expects to reduce emissions by 10 percent by 2012, which would equal 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Casella plans to achieve its goal by building gas-to-energy facilities at six of its landfills, using alternative fuels in its fleets, deploying energy conservation programs at its facilities and implementing environmentally friendly practices created by its employees.

Casella also is the only solid waste and recycling company that is a member of the EPA Climate Leaders Program, an industry-government partnership to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies.

"We have worked closely with the EPA since 2003 to inventory our greenhouse gas emissions and establish our reduction goals," said John Casella, chairman and CEO of Casella, in a press release. "Our thirty-two year history as a company has taught us that a commitment to protecting and conserving environmental resources opens up exciting and viable new business opportunities. We have made investments that are reshaping the way the world views waste.”
