Government and Industry Collaborate for Clean Engines

Dearborn, Mich. – The Diesel Technology Forum (DTF), an organization representing several engine manufacturers, is working with federal government agencies on the 21st Century Truck Initiative. The partnership joins leaders from the diesel industry, such as Caterpillar, Peoria, Ill.; Cummins, Columbus, Ind.; Detroit Diesel, Detroit; and Eaton, Kalamazoo, Mich., with the U.S. Army, the Department of Energy the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation. For 2003, the partners will conduct joint research on developing energy-saving technologies, such as advanced combustion engines. The DTF projects that by 2007, engine makers, fuel refiners and manufacturers of exhaust control devices will have virtually eliminated emissions of nitrogen oxides from new trucks and buses.
