OPINION POLL RESULTS:
Do you think that offenses such as drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident and excessive speeding — even if committed during off-duty hours — should cost a commercial truck driver his license/job?
You said: 80 percent, yes; 20 percent, no; 20 percent, other
"No! I've been victimized by traffic cops many times. They give you a ticket, although they obviously know you aren't guilty - and then count on your being out of town so that you won't show up to trial. I surprise them. I show up to trial - even in other states. Usually, the cop isn't there - he's on guard training, testifying at another trial, etc. Unfortunately, traffic tickets are revenue raisers, and not used to improve traffic safety."
- Rick Nudd, Rick Nudd, Ltd., Walworth, N.Y.
"My husband and I have been in a trucking related business since 1970. We have a rule: If you work for us, we have a no DUI tolerance. [If we didn’t feel this way, it would reflect poorly] on our company, and on truck drivers in general. I believe truckers always are getting a bum rap. [However,] if the state requires you to forfeit your driver’s license, then yes, we agree, especially [with] DUI charges."
