Jackson, Miss. -- Mississippi’s budget woes may have a detrimental effect on household hazardous waste and tire collection campaigns in 2005. Assistance for these campaigns is provided by the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), which announced that counties’ solid waste campaign assistance programs are expected to lose about $5.1 million in award money through June 30, 2005. The state needed to acquire $82 million in state government special funds to help balance the budget through the rest of the fiscal year.
