NSWMA Applauds Obama Environmental Nominees

President-elect Obama’s nominees to lead the federal energy and environmental agencies sit well with the Washington-based National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA).

Lisa Jackson, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, was selected to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Steven Chu, energy specialist and director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, was chosen to be the next energy secretary. Nancy Sutley, deputy mayor of Los Angeles, is slated to be chair of the Council on Environmental Quality. Carol Browner, board member of the Center for American Progress and former head of the U.S. EPA during the Clinton administration, is Obama’s choice for a newly created position to oversee energy, climate and environmental issues.

Bruce Parker, president and CEO of the NSWMA, applauds the nominees and says he looks forward to working with them. “The solid waste management industry deals every day with the most practical aspects of solving this country’s environmental and energy issues, and we are delighted with the President-elect’s emphasis on pragmatic solutions,” he said in a press release. “We especially look forward to working with the new team on achieving the huge potential benefits from increased recycling and greatly expanding the development of clean, renewable energy from landfill gas.”
