A New Hampshire house committee is proposing a surcharge on garbage to fund recycling initiatives. According to an article in the New Hampshire Union Leader, the Environment and Agriculture Committee has proposed a $1 per ton or 25 cents per cubic yard fee for garbage that is hauled to landfills and incinerators. The generated funds will provide grants to non-profit organizations to assist communities and business with waste-reduction efforts.

The bill, which received unanimous support from the committee, will be presented to the house in January, the paper says.
