The Washington Electric Cooperative has received clearance from the Vermont Public Service Board to expand its methane-powered electricity plant located at a landfill in Coventry, Vt. The New England Waste Services of Vermont landfill, the largest in the state, is owned by Casella Waste Systems and has been generating power since July 2005 using three turbines, according to an Associated Press report. Pending co-op approval later this month, the plant will add a fourth turbine by the end of the year.
