The city is dumping its trash service, Waste Management, because of mounting service complaints, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said Monday.
At a special meeting, the Sanitary District Board of Commissioners voted 3-0 to terminate the five-year contract, signed in 2012.
The city is expected to bid out the service and retain a new trash hauler in the next few weeks.
Jewell Harris Jr., the district attorney, said the contract allows the city to terminate it with a minimum of seven days notice and a maximum of 30 days. He said Waste Management officials were unaware of the district’s action and he plans to notify them Tuesday. Harris said the district was invoking the “convenience” clause written into the contract.
