Grand Jury Says San Diego Should Replace Brittle Trash Cans for Free

A county grand jury found that nearly 12,000 black trash bins in San Diego had to be replaced at owner expense in the last fiscal year, which is up from 7,400 the year before. And in an effort to find out how these bins got damaged and why they weren’t being replaced, the grand jury launched an investigation and found out that many bins cracked from cold temperatures and a large number of bins were damaged via collection vehicles.

Currently, replacement of the garbage bins costs residents $95, while replacement of green and blue recycling bins is free. The grand jury has stated that it believes that the city should offer free replacement of garbage bins, and city officials have until June 12 to respond to the grand jury report.
