A study from consultant Gershman Brickner & Bratton found that the closing of the Middle Point Landfill in eight years could lead to monthly garbage hauling costs in Rutherfod County, Tenn., to double.

The County Commission and the Murfreesboro City Council split the costs to hire the consulting firm for $250,100. Representatives of the city, county and consulting firm met with reporters Wednesday to discuss the solid waste study.

The Daily News Journal has the story:

"There's no option that's going to cost less," said Harvey Gershman, a consultant from Fairfax, Va., whose firm is working on an 11-month Solid Waste Disposal Feasibility Study for the Rutherford County and Murfreesboro governments. "It's going to cost more (for) a more sustainable, greener system than they have now."

On a national level, the per household cost to haul trash is in the $10 to $50 range. The goal in Rutherford County will be to keep the expected increase to around $20 to cover the hauling, recycling and operating of waste-to-energy plants by large employers, said Gershman, the president and founder of Gershman, Brickner & Bratton Inc.
