Since the city of Simpsonville resumed its recycling program in 2011, it has proven to be a good idea. Now city officials are hoping grants will help it expand.
During the economic woes of 2008, Simpsonville's Public Works cut the recycling program to save money. The program returned in 2011 with a makeover.
For a one-time fee of $25, residents in the city limits received a 96-gallon rolling can for recycling. It was basically a green version of the city's regular blue trash cans. The city receives $25 per ton of recycled material it delivers to Sonoco Recycling on White Horse Road.
