Waterloo, N.Y., Won’t Refund Residents for Recyclables that Were Landfilled
The city is claiming that Cedar Valley Recycling and Transfer told the city two days before January collection started that it was still closed and couldn’t accept curbside items for recycling.

The Waterloo, N.Y., City Council voted 4-3 against refunding $6 to each of the curbside recycling service customers whose recyclable materials were landfilled instead of recycled for the first two months of 2017.
The city is claiming that Cedar Valley Recycling and Transfer told the city two days before January collection started that it was still closed and couldn’t accept curbside items for recycling, leaving the city with the option of landfilling the materials or arranging for transportation to haul the materials to Cedar Rapids, which would have cost three times more for the service.

The city will not refund fees to customers whose recyclables were landfilled for two months.
City Council members voted 4-3 Monday to reject paying back $6 to each of the curbside recycling service customers whose cardboard, cans, newspapers and plastics were instead hauled to the landfill in December and January.
