After Winning a Legal Battle, Oyster Bay, Long Island, Makes Switch to Single Stream Recycling

Following a legal challenge that was defeated in the New York State Supreme Court in July, the community of Oyster Bay on Long Island has now made the switch to a single stream recycling system.
A judge in July denied a temporary restraining order sought by Forest Hills-based Giove Company Inc. to stop the town from opening bids and awarding a new contract.

The town currently operates on a dual-stream system that requires residents to separate paper and cardboard from metals, glass and plastics.
Single-stream recycling requires less work on the part of residents. Items are separated in the facility instead of at the curb.
Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino says the new program will generate up to $2 million in revenue.
