Pasco County, Fla., Trashing Old Recycling Program

Beginning in October, Pasco County no longer will accept recyclables in blue bags.

County commissioners this week approved the first of what could be several revisions to the county recycling program. Beginning Oct. 1, customers must place their recyclables at the curb in a garbage can of their choice.

Recycling coordinator Jennifer Seney said the policy change is necessary because the county’s contract with its current recycling processor, Lakeland-based Republic Services, expires Sept. 30, and none of the local processors will accept blue bags.

For 22 years, Pasco and its trash haulers have required customers to put their recyclable items in blue bags. Consequently, the county had one of the lowest participation rates in Florida. Pasco revamped the program in 2013 by distributing stickers that customers could affix to any container placed at the curb.
