Atlanta To Start Shipping Trash To Transfer Stations Today
Atlanta — The city of Atlanta will start shipping its garbage through two transfer stations located in Fulton County, Ga., today, reports The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. According to the paper, the county filed a lawsuit two weeks ago that alleges "that the city’s plan to have its garbage trucks unload at transfer stations outside the city, where the trash could be relayed by truck to landfills in other counties, broke state law." Lawyers for the city then requested that the case be moved to federal court, but on Tuesday, a federal judge "ruled that he did not have jurisdiction in the case and sent it back to Fulton County Superior Court without an opinion," the paper says.
The trash’s previous destination, the Live Oak Municipal Solid Waste Landfill in south DeKalb County, is closing today per a previous court order.
