Illinois State Senator Karina Villa’s new law will hold large event facilities responsible for recycling and composting materials to address the amount of waste they produce.

The new law, which goes into effect Jan 1, 2025, requires large event facilities with an occupancy of at least 3,500 people to participate in their county recycling programs and compost organic materials produced during the event. Those who violate the law will face fines of up to $1,500 for the first offense and $2,500 for all offenses after.

“Advocating for the health of our environment ensures the health of our communities which has been long recognized by our state,” said Villa (D-West Chicago). “This law will maintain Illinois’ standing as a leader in environmental policy.”

“Reducing the amount of waste that enters our landfills must be a policy priority. By passing legislation focused on sustainability, we are securing a bright, healthy future for generations to come.”
