Michigan Files PFAS Contamination Lawsuit

The state of Michigan has filed a lawsuit against 17 individual companies for allegedly contaminating Michigan’s environment with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The Detroit News reports that DuPont and Minnesota-based 3M are among the companies named in the suit. According to the report, state officials believe the early filing could give Michigan a "first in" advantage on potential settlements or judgments against the chemical companies.

The report also notes that the lawsuit was filed in Washtenaw County, in part because of the impact PFAS contaminants have had on the Huron River watershed. In October, Michigan’s attorney general hired three "nationally known" law firms with expertise in contaminant litigation to assist the department in assembling the case.

The state of Michigan will sue 17 individual companies for chemical contaminants known as PFAS with which the companies are alleged to have contaminated Michigan’s environment.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in Washtenaw County Circuit Court will seek to recoup the cost of addressing contamination at more than 70 sites in Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel said Tuesday alongside Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Among those companies named in the suit are chemical companies DuPont and Minnesota-based 3M.
