The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has charged that Sims Metal Management illegally discharged wastes into San Francisco Bay.

The EPA has ordered the metals and electronics recycler to comply with the Clean Water Act after the agency found discharges ofpolychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), mercury, lead, copper and zinc into San Francisco Bay from the New York-based Sims’ Port of Redwood City, Calif., facility.

In March and August of 2011 the EPA found evidence of pollutants from Sims being discharged into tributaries and areas that flow into the bay, the agency said in a news release.

The EPA said Sims “is working cooperatively with the EPA to address requirements of the order.”
