Residents Push Back Against Cedar Falls, Iowa’s One-Sided Waste Collection

In an effort to reduce noise and save mileage, fuel and wear and tear on trucks, the city of Cedar Falls, Iowa, passed a rule that requires some residents to place their garbage on one side of the street for collections via side-loading garbage trucks with mechanical arms.

Since the rule went into effect in late 2015, residents have begun fighting back and asking the city to return to picking up garbage on both sides of the street. Thirteen residents recently created a petition about the issue, which is being reviewed by the City Council this week.

Neighbors on one city street are trashing a move by the city to make them set their garbage out on one side of the street for pickup.

Residents on Summit Drive have petitioned the city to return to picking up garbage on both sides of their street.

In late 2015, the city began making residents on some streets put garbage receptacles on one side of the street for pickup. Officials said the move would save mileage, fuel and wear and tear on trucks and reduce noise as trucks make just one pass through a neighborhood.
