SWANA Urges Congress to Support Local Governments

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) joined with more than 170 other organizations to ask Congress to support local governments at this critical time.

A letter sent to Congressional leaders makes the appeal that, “As Congress considers additional federal assistance packages in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical that you include direct relief to cities, towns and villages.” It further notes that, “Without a lifeline to recover and restore local economic activity, cities will be forced to make cuts to essential services that will have a ripple effect across the public and private sectors.”

SWANA supports legislation that would provide $500 billion of federal aid over two years to local governments. “Municipal governments are incurring increased expenses and are taking in less revenue due to the pandemic, and this can be expected to continue for several years,” noted David Biderman, executive director and CEO of SWANA. 

This latest appeal is one of the many ways SWANA is advocating for the solid waste industry during the pandemic and beyond.
