The business of recycling is complicated. Complex packaging that incorporates multiple materials is problematic for recyclers.
Many packages incorporate multiple materials like the full body, shrink-to-fit plastic labels on beer cans and yogurt containers.
There is a new movement to eliminate the recycling problem. The Association of Plastic Recyclers created a design guide for plastics recyclability. The guide provides information about recycling the labels, glues and fitting of eight different polymer types.
The Aluminum Association releases a design guide for recyclability. And the American Forest & Paper Association is working to develop guidelines for paper recyclability.
