Australia's recycling program for soft plastics has collapsed despite $60 million in recent infrastructure improvements.
REDcycle, who was tasked with managing the program, collected an average of 150 million bags per month. However, a fire at its recycling facility rendered it unable to recycle soft plastics.
The product stewardship consortium has stockpiled plastics since then. Coles, Woolworths and Aldi were granted a special exemption under Australian antitrust law to collect plastics at nearly 2,000 supermarkets countrywide.
It is unclear how much of the plastic collected was actually recycled.
