Boston-Based Startup Raises $5M to Collect, Recycle Sargassum
A large amount of sargassum is heading for the Florida shore, and a Boston-based company is coming in to collect the materials for upcycling.

Boston-based startup, Carbonwave, is a company that upcycles sargassum seaweed into biomaterials. Recently, Carbonwave raised $5 million in venture capital funding.
Currently, the largest-ever mass of sargassum seaweed if floating toward Florida’s west coast, with some already washing up on the area’s beaches.
Geoff Chapin, CEO of Carbonwave, mentioned the plan was to simply farm seaweed but that plan changed once the sargassum blooms began to proliferate. The company has contracts with several Florida resorts to collect seaweed near their properties.
