Brewers Need Cans. California’s Broken Recycling System is Making Them Hard to Find

Amongst a shortage of aluminum cans in the United States, it is brewers who might be hit the hardest; especially small and local brands. This shortage is only strengthened by recycling processes in California that can be to blame for a massive drop in can recycling rates since 2016.

According to CalRecycle, recycling rates for aluminum cans have dropped from 91 to 73 percent between the years 2016 and 2021. California beer companies are struggling to balance the demand for beer with access to aluminium cans in the state, driving up prices and putting brands at the risk of going out of business.
