Duke Energy loaded up the first truckloads of coal ash Thursday from its W.S. Lee Steam Station in Belton, S.C., to ship to a landfill in Homer, Ga.
Waste Management will transport material in closed trucks to its own lined landfill Georgia. The company will move about 1.4 million tons of the roughly 3.6 million tons at the ash pond and a smaller ash fill at Lee to the Waste Management site over the next three years.
Duke plans to build a fully lined landfill for the remainder of the ash and is looking at putting it on the plant site.
