In the summer of 2021, Connecticut removed black plastics from the list of items their recycling programs will accept. This includes black plastic products specifically branded with the recyclable emblem.
The decision was made due to automated sorting systems being unable to correctly categorize the material with other plastics, leading to it contaminating other materials such as paper, glass, or aluminum. The more contaminates there are, the less likely companies are going to be to accept large bunches of recycled material.
