Covanta Subsidiary Opens New Materials Processing Facility in Milwaukee

Covanta Environmental Solutions, a provider of environmental services and subsidiary of Covanta Holding Corp., has opened a new materials processing facility in Milwaukee.

The facility provides services including liquid and solid waste recycling and treatment, product de-packaging, tanker, railcar and industrial facility cleaning and houses a fleet of vehicles that provide on-site cleanups, remediation and transportation services.

The new facility, spanning across 13 acres of formerly vacant industrial property allows Covanta Environmental Solutions to expand and grow its services throughout the Midwest, after 20 years of success at a former site in the city.

“We continue to grow our environmental services business by expanding our non-hazardous liquid and solid waste collection, transportation and treatment capabilities,” Paul Stauder, president of Covanta Environmental Solutions, said in a statement.

The new material processing facility is double the capacity of the company’s former site and is capable of treating more than 60 million gallons of liquid waste annually.

The facility also houses Covanta Environmental Solutions’ UnWrapp technology, which de-packages and recycles consumer products that have been recalled, expired or discarded as a result of being damaged or off-spec.

“Job creation starts with businesses like Covanta making investments in the community,” Milwaukee Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton said in a statement. “This new state-of-the-art facility provides well-paying jobs and will provide new career opportunities as the business continues to grow. I commend Covanta for making this important investment in our city.”

Covanta Environmental Solutions works with industries including pharmaceuticals, consumer products, health and beauty, food, automotive, chemicals and other manufacturers. The company’s services help solve environmental challenges faced by these industries and minimize risk.

Last week, as part of its third quarter earnings report, Covanta reported that revenue in its environmental services business was up to $32 million in the third quarter, compared to $26 million a year ago. The line generates about $200 million in revenue annually.

In March, Covanta CEO Stephen Jones attributed growth in that business line to more companies and government entities setting zero waste to landfill goals and looking for alternatives to disposal.
