Denver to Reduce Recycling Collection to Make Room For Composting Pick Ups

Denver is rolling out a citywide expansion of its composting service next year by delivering green composting bins to every solid waste customer who wants one.

Denver is rolling out a citywide expansion of its composting service next year by delivering green composting bins to every solid waste customer who wants one.

To meet the desired expectation of limiting greenhouse gas emissions from its trucks, Denver will be cutting back on its recycling service to keep up with compost collection. Recycling will be reduced to a bi-weekly pick up to make room for compost bin pick up.

“What we’ve learned over the years is (that) we are dramatically underusing our recycling bins each week. We are actually increasing our impact on the environment by running that much recycling (pickup) without that much demand,” Mayor Mike Johnston said in an interview. “We can use the people and the trucks to run those weekly compost routes all over the city.”
