Manufacturers of computer and television equipment who recycle their equipment could someday be in line for tax relief from the federal government.

U.S. Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, R-Calif., recently introduced a bill (HR 4553) that would provide tax credits to electronic equipment manufacturers who operate “an environmentally sound recycling program for use by consumers who want to discard the equipment.” The legislation, which is co-sponsored by U.S. Reps. Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Major Owens, D-N.Y., would provide the manufacturers with a $4 federal tax credit for each central processing unit, monitor, television and printer they recycle. The manufacturers also would receive a $1 credit for each mouse and keyboard recycled.

In mid-June, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. No further action had been taken on the legislation as of late August.
