Hattiesburg, Miss., City Council Asked to Consider Alternate Recycling Plan

The City of Hattiesburg may not be renewing its contract for curbside recycling when it expires at the end of the year.

But the city is hoping to establish an in-house program that would utilize manned drop-off collection sites while re-emphasizing the education of school children to the importance of recycling.

A committee of city employees, Southern Mississippi educators, recycling enthusiasts, community leaders and a pair of Hattiesburg High School seniors Monday night presented a plan to City Council that would pick up after the current recycling program is phased out.

The goal: to have the new system waiting in the wings so that it can be operational Jan. 1.
