Typically, trash from the International Space Station (ISS) is stored within the station and collected when it is visited by the Cygnus cargo spacecraft.
This could become a method of the past as the ISS tests the effectiveness of new methods of disposal that allow waste to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere safely. To avoid contributing to "space junk" the new method uses a special waste container that burns up upon entering Earth's atmosphere.
Since 1999, the ISS has had to reroute 25 times to avoid crashing into space junk.
