Michigan Recycling Rate Grows 5 Percent Over Last Five Years

State officials have stated that Michigan has set a record for growth in recycling rate as the state has increased that rate to 5% over the last five years.

Michigan has been known for being in last place of all states when it comes to recycling rates, but it is making improvements overtime. Before 2019, Michigan had a recycling rate of 14.25% and after last year the state had a rate of 19.3% with estimate showing the current rate exceeds 21%.

“Over the past decade, Michigan has nearly doubled the annual amount of recycled materials that is not being buried in a hole in the ground forever. We’re having a lasting impact,” said Matt Flechter, recycling market development specialist for the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

Currently, the nationwide average for recycling rate is 32%.
