New Disposal Area Opened at US Nuclear Waste Repository

The US Nuclear Waste Repository has begun using a new disposal area referred to as Panel 8.

The United States only nuclear waste repository has begun utilizing a newly mined disposal area in Southern New Mexico. Officials from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant say the new first of the waste containers to be sent to the new disposal area are from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. The new disposal area is referred to as Panel 8 as it is the eighth of several other sites designed for disposing of lab coats, rubber gloves, tools, and debris contaminated with plutonium and other radioactive elements. The opening of the new panel has already been acclaimed to smooth operations at the facility.
