New Napa Garbage/Recycling Contract May Exceed $250 million
September 30, 2014
A drive to increase Napa’s recycling rate and refresh the garbage truck fleet may be in the city’s future – along with higher costs for its next waste collection agreement.
Napa’s next contract with Napa Recycling & Waste Services is likely to cost the city 10 to 30 percent more than its current deal for solid waste collection and recycling, city officials wrote the City Council last week. The cost of a new agreement, which likely would begin in 2017, is expected to exceed $250 million over a term of 12 to 14 years.
The city’s Materials Division is scheduled to brief the council Tuesday as it prepares to hammer out a new waste collection deal with Napa Recycling. Negotiations are tentatively scheduled for the spring, with a vote possible as early as July, according to Kevin Miller, the city’s recycling manager.
Napa’s current waste management contract, which began nine years ago, is slated to pay Napa Recycling between $170 million and $210 million. A one-year extension exercised by the city will keep that deal in force through the end of 2016.
