AT ITS RECENT ANNUAL awards ceremony, the Washington, D.C.-based National Recycling Coalition's (NRC) presented William Heenan, president of the Steel Recycling Institute, Pittsburgh, with its “Recycler of the Year — Lifetime Achievement” award. The ceremony took place at NRC's 24th Annual Congress & Expo, held in late August in San Francisco.

Other NRC award winners included New York City Councilman Michael E. McMahon, who received the “Best Local Elected Recycling Leader” award; the Bellwood, Pa.-based Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania, which won the “Outstanding Recycling Organization” award; Dell Inc., Round Rock, Texas, which received the “Fred Schmitt Award for Outstanding Corporate Leadership;” and the Orange County, N.C., Solid Waste Management Department, which won the “Beth Brown Boettner Award for Outstanding Public Education.” To view the rest of the award winners, visit 0www.nrc-recycle.org.

In other news from the convention, Dell announced that it has granted 20 organizations and governmental departments $10,000 each to boost computer recycling. Each awardee will use the money to conduct a “No Computer Should Go to Waste” event.

Also, NRC announced that the California Department of Conservation will be seeking applications in October for a grant program aimed at increasing the recycling rates of aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers. The Beverage Container Recycling Market Development and Expansion Grant Program awards up to $10 million annually to projects that promote recycling.
