Pinellas County, Fla. is making changes to its solid waste ordinance, which hasn't been updated since the 1980s.
The county is seeing exponential growth in its population and is expected to welcome another 200,000 residents by 2050. Based on this projection, Pinellas estimates that the local landfill will fill up by the year 2100.
While that is still decades away, officials are seeking to require mandatory recycling. The county's 2020 master plan stated that "nearly a third" of the waste sent for incarceration was recyclable.
