Recently published research examines a lithium-ion recycling method that refurbished the cathode of lithium-ion batteries.
Experts found that this method performed just as well as new cathodes. The research, published in Joule, discovered that the recycled piece lasted longer and charged faster.
Normally, the entire lithium-ion battery is shredded and melted into black mass, from which compounds can be extracted. This process keeps the original cathode's composition "intact."
The Department of Energy anticipates that demand for lithium-ion batteries will grow ten-fold in the next decade.
