San Diego's long history of free trash collection could be ending now that the city is considering charging for trash and recycling services.
The San Diego community has been asked to share opinions at several workshops that started in the summer, with the latest workshop happening this week. Residents have submitted roughly 6,000 comments on things like new bins, bulk item pick-up, and collection events for hard-to-dispose-of items.
Since San Diego voters passed Measure B in 2022, the city can assess a dedicated fee for trash and recycling collection. The final proposal will go before the council in June, and if it passes, new services and charges could start in July 2025.
