Students at UW-La Crosse have been awarded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) after they started a recycling program on campus during moving-out events.

The program, “Reduce, Reuse, Reimagine: Dumpster Diversion” has been awarded the 2024 Recycling Excellence Award by DNR. Students were stationed at different dumpsters on campus during the move where they diverted salvageable items from the landfill. In total, the student volunteers saved 16,000 pounds of furniture and other items from being trashed.

“The success of this program highlights our collective responsibility to reduce waste and support our community,” said Andrew Ericson, UWL’s Sustainability Program director in a statement. “It’s a great example of how we can work together to make a positive impact.”
