Tracking Trends in Landfill Tipping Fees (WasteExpo 2023)

Landfill tipping fees are the fees paid per ton to dispose of waste at waste management facilities. Tracking trends in landfill tipping fees is important as these trends can provide financial information about the state of the solid waste industry. For the last seven years, the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) has tracked municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill tipping fees and provided summary information on national, regional and state trends. This session will provide an overview of EREF’s analysis of fees during this period including information on how tipping fees vary based on landfill size and tonnage managed, trends in tipping fees for states with waste-to-energy facilities and trends in tipping fees for facilities that accept construction and demolition debris. The session also will look at other historical sources of landfill tipping fees and how fees have changed over time.
