Covanta Announces Five-Year Plan to Double its Waste Intake in Niagara

Covanta Holding Corp., a waste and energy firm located in Morristown, N.J., has announced a five-year plan to double its amount of non-hazardous waste intake in Niagara.
Last week, Covanta officials met with the Town Board to discuss its application to amend its permit with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The current permit caps the company’s total of non-hazardous, non-regulated “profiled” waste at 50 tons per day, and the proposed permit includes a request to double that amount.
The company’s permit application also includes expansion plans to handle the extra amount of waste, an installation of a shredder to break up solid waste, a new building for the machine and more.

Company officials met Wednesday with the Town Board to discuss initial steps in its application process to amend its permit with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. As lead agent, the town is the first stop in the process, it was noted.
Greg Russell, Covanta vice president, said the facility at 8335-8337 Quarry Road needs approval to double its permit limit of 50 tons of non-hazardous, non-regulated “profiled waste” a day and undertake some additional expansion plans.
