Tech Companies Need to Do More to Solve eWaste

Approximately 6.9 million metric tons of e-waste was produced in the U.S. in 2019. (Global E-Waste Monitor) But only about 15 percent was collected for recycling and some of the minerals and metals that are thrown away are toxic.

Much of the technology is no longer made with screws, instead with glue, and it makes it much more difficult to take them apart and recover the materials from them.

Technology companies aren’t doing enough to keep their devices out of landfills. On average, users keep their phones only for about two years, if tech companies create phones that stayed relevant for four to five years it would make a big difference to solve the problem of eWaste. In addition, consumers need to be more responsible when purchasing devices.
